How it started

It started with a picky little eater.

Like many great business ideas, Dog-lores Jane's started because of a picky eater. Dolores Jane has never been impressed with most dog food — brand after brand, flavor after flavor, and to this day she still hasn't found one she'll happily eat every single day. Treats weren't much different.

Out of everything we tried, there were only a handful she actually liked. One of her favorites was freeze-dried lamb hearts. The problem? A small bag cost around $15, and with a dog who loved them that much, I seemed to be buying a new bag every week.

One day I looked at Jeff and said, "I can make these cheaper myself." So I bought some lamb hearts and started researching freeze-drying.

Then I stopped by Kaminski Farms to ask if I could buy organs directly from them. When Mrs. Kaminski asked what I was planning to do with them, I explained my idea — and she surprised me. She said she'd be interested in carrying the treats. I told her I'd think about it.

A few days later, Jeff and I went to dinner with friends who own Red Coach Donuts. The conversation somehow turned to dog treats, and before dinner was over they told me they'd want to sell them too. At that point, what was a girl supposed to do? I've always had a side hustle — so I took the leap.

What began as one picky little dog and a bag of lamb hearts has grown into a small Michigan business built on quality ingredients, local partnerships, and a whole lot of love. And it all started because Dolores Jane had expensive taste.
